Senate Awards

Students in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences can apply for a variety of additional awards. Some awards are only available to either undergraduate or graduate students. Please review each description to ensure eligibility.

Pushor Mitchell LLP Gold Medal Leadership Prize

A $10,000 prize is offered by Pushor Mitchell LLP to a graduating student in the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science or Irving K. Barber Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at The University of British Columbia Okanagan. In addition to academic achievement in the student’s final 48 credits, candidates for the award must demonstrate leadership in one or more of the following areas: community service or volunteerism, cross-cultural relations, promotion of diversity, intellectual pursuits, and artistic or athletic endeavours. The prize is awarded on the recommendation of the Faculty.

Students from the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences interested in applying must meet the criteria set out in both the award description and Senate Regulations Governing University Awards.

The application form must be submitted to ikbawardsandevents.ubco@ubc.ca on or before the deadline indicated on the application.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Students must apply for June graduation in their final year of study (i.e. students applying for the award in March 2024 must be graduating in June 2024.) Please see the Regulations Governing University Awards for further information:

Students who are eligible for graduation may end up taking fewer than 24 credits in their final year. Please see the eligibility requirements for scholarships.

Only students graduating from the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences or the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science are eligible to apply for this award.

Two references must be sent from each referee to qualify.

The recipient is announced at the June Convocation.

Students who have failed courses are ineligible, as per the Regulations Governing University Awards.

We do not require references to be from UBC. Please choose a reference that can best speak to your leadership qualities (ex. employer, coach, etc.).

Applicants are adjudicated by a joint committee, comprised of faculty members from the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science.

A $1,350 award is offered by Petraroia Langford LLP to a student graduating from the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at The University of British Columbia, Okanagan campus. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty to a student who shows great promise in the field of law.

A $3,900 award is offered by the Henderson family through the Shuswap Community Foundation to an undergraduate or graduate student at The University of British Columbia, Okanagan campus who is participating in an international health and/or international community development initiative taking place in a developing country, with preference given to an international student. The award is made by Faculty, School or College nomination to Enrolment Services.

A $1,450 prize is offered by HSBC Bank Canada in memory of the Okanagan Mountain Park Fire. The prizes are awarded to a student in the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science, or the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, or the Faculty of Health and Social Development, or the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan campus who has conducted a research project or special initiative that examines the sociological, economical, ecological, environmental, psychological, or health impacts of environmental disturbances (terrestrial, aquatic, marine; natural or human-caused). The prize will be conferred upon a student from each of the following Faculties, in successive years, and in this order: the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science, Irving K. Barber Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Faculty of Health and Social Development, and then the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies.

New Monaco, Enterprise GP Corporation, offers a $1,000 award to a student entering the third or fourth year in the School of Engineering, the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science, the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, or the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan campus who has demonstrated achievement in the area of sustainable development, including urban planning, engineering, and design; energy or water efficiency; and/or renewable energy. Preference is given to a student who focuses on the Okanagan community. The award will be conferred upon a student from each of the following Schools and Faculty, in successive years, and in this order: the School of Engineering, the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science, the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and then the Faculty of Critical and Creative Studies.
